iPod & iTunes: Burn a Data CD

One of the simplest ways to put digital music on your stereo—burning a data CD-R filled with MP3s for playing on any CD or DVD player that supports MP3 CDs (which covers an increasing percentage of both home and portable CD and DVD players).

  1. Open iTunes, and go to Edit | Preferences | Burning.
  2. Click the button for MP3 CD; or, if you know that your CD or DVD player supports playlists, click Data CD or DVD. The former choice is more reliable, but the latter lets you burn multiple playlists onto the disc.
  3. Create a playlist of the songs you want to burn onto the CD-R. Generally, you want to make the playlist 650MB or 740MB, depending on the capacity of the disc you're burning it to (iTunes shows you how big the playlist is at the bottom of the window).
  4. Insert a blank CD-R.
  5. Click the Burn button at the upper right of the iTunes window.
