iPod & iTunes: Fix iTunes If It Starts Stuttering

Every once in a while—especially after installing new audio hardware or software on a Windows computer—you might notice iTunes stutter during playback. You'll hear a fast skipping, repeated maybe two or three times per second, with silence in between each skip. It's not subtle; you'll recognize it clearly. Here's how to fix that.

  1. Close iTunes.
  2. Go to Start menu | Control Panel, or follow whatever steps you normally take to open the Windows Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the QuickTime menu item.
  4. Go to SoundOut in the drop-down menu at the top (there are a lot of items there; SoundOut is about two-thirds of the way down).
  5. In the Choose A Device For Playback drop-down menu, choose waveOut instead of DirectSound.
  6. Close the QuickTime Settings window.
