PC Preventive Maintenance: Put Together a Cleaning Toolkit

To properly clean your PC you need the proper tools. All of these products should be available at your local computer store or supermarket:

  • Cleaning solution You could buy one of the many specialized cleaning products you'll see on computer store shelves, but water diluted with a mild cleaning solution such as Formula 409 or Simple Green will serve just as well.
  • Isopropyl alcohol Ordinary rubbing alcohol is also a good cleaner.
  • Canned compressed air Should cost less than $10.
  • PC vacuum cleaner Belkin's tiny MiniVak vacuum cleaner costs only $12 and works great for removing dust from hard-to-get-at places (www.belkin.com).

  • Lint-free, anti-static wipes Lint-free wipes will keep dust from accumulating inside your case and obstructing your optical drives.
  • Q-tip swabs Swabs are really handy for cleaning hard-to-get-to nooks and crannies.
