Windows XP Outlook Express Headaches: I can't create a mail/news rule.

Cause Outlook Express provides you the option to create rules that determine how certain e-mail or news messages are handled. You can create rules based on message content, words in the subject heading, and even rules that automatically list certain people in the To field.

The Pain Killer To create a mail or news rule, follow these steps:

  1. In Outlook Express, click Tools | Message Rules. On the Message Rules menu, click Mail or News, depending on whether you want to create a mail rule or a news rule.
  2. In the New Mail Rule or New News Rule window, choose the condition, the action, the description, and the name, as shown in the illustration. As you choose the conditions and actions, the rule description will change. Click the underlined hyperlinks to customize the condition. Be sure to make the rule specific. Click OK when you are done.

  3. The new mail or news rule now appears in the mail rules or news rules list, as you can see in the illustration. You can use this window to create new rules, delete rules, or modify existing rules at any time. Click OK when you are done.
