Windows XP Performance Headaches: I lose control of my computer until printing is finished.

Cause If you lose control of your computer when you print, the computer is configured to print directly to the printer instead of using the printer spool. This causes the system to use all of its resources on the print job, which may cause you to lose control of the desktop and applications.

The Pain Killer To make sure your printer is using the print spool, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start | Control Panel | Printers and Faxes.
  2. Right-click the Printer icon and click Properties.
  3. Click the Advanced tab. Make sure the Spool Print Documents So Program Finishes Printing Faster radio button is selected. Under this setting, make sure the Start Printing Immediately radio button is also selected. Click OK.
