Cause You can make a document, file, application, or just about anything appear on the Start menu permanently instead of as a temporary item. This action, called “pinning,” makes the item always appear on the Start menu until you remove it at a later time.
The Pain Killer To pin an item to the Start menu, follow these steps:
- Click Start.
- Look on the Start menu for the item you want to pin. If it is there, right-click the item that you want to appear permanently on the Start menu and click Pin to Start Menu. The item moves up to the permanent “pinned” item section of the Start menu and will remain there until you remove it. Items on the left side of the Start menu are pinned and unpinned items. Items above the divider bar are already pinned, while items underneath it are recently used items that can be pinned to the Start menu, if you so choose. The right side of the Start menu contains commonly accessed items, such as My Computer, My Documents, and so on. These items appear by default on the Start menu, so they do not need to be pinned.
- If the item you want to pin is not on the Start menu, such as a document or a file, you can simply drag the document or file to the Start button. This will create a shortcut to the item on the Start menu (but will not move or change your original document or file.)
- Now, click the Start menu again. You can see that the item is listed in the pinned section of the Start menu. Documents or files that you drag to the Start menu are automatically pinned there until you decide to remove them, which you can do by right-clicking them and clicking Remove from This List.
