This sleek-looking phone features a center scroll-wheel for navigation, a slide-out keyboard, and a souped-up version of myFaves (the T-Mobile interface). Extras include a 2-megapixel camera, music, multimedia, and an especially bright screen. There's also Microsoft Mobile Office 6, built-in Wi-Fi, and a number of instant messaging clients. Sure, it won't be mistaken for an iPhone, but the cost ($150 with a two-year plan) is much more palatable.
For $99, this miniature version of the famed Palm Treo hits a sweet spot between price and functionality. Just make sure your college kid has slender fingers, though, as the keyboard is exceptionally tiny. It runs the Palm OS, which is looking a bit long in the tooth, but it uses Sprint's fast EV-DO network, and it has a 1.3-megapixel camera, and lots of great email and multimedia features.
If you loved Guitar Hero, you'll find nirvana in Rock Band, where you and your friends are the band. It has lead and bass guitars, drums, and a microphone, along with music from some of the rock ‘n' roll greats. You follow along with each of your instruments as the artists riff on screen. Whether you’re in the same room with friends or playing online, you’re all in the band tapping and clicking away on your virtual instruments. Available for Xbox and PlayStation.
This is one of the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor-based machines. (There’s an AMD version as well.) It makes a great entertainment machine, with the ability to start applications from a launch panel, great-sounding speakers, an omnidirectional microphone, a webcam, and a built-in optical drive. And it costs less than $1,000, despite all the high-speed connectivity and entertainment features it offers.
Thin and lightweight is in on campus, especially for cameras. Add 10 megapixels, a hefty zoom, great video capture, and a direct-to-YouTube Capture Mode, and you’ve got a varsity winner.
The camera has only four buttons. You can zoom in and out and capture video and sound; once you’ve got it, release the USB and move the video directly to YouTube or another video site. Even better, all the software you need for simple editing lives right in the camera.
This $20 game from Hasbro lets you attach four iPods to an external speaker, then pick cards with instructions for a musical scavenger hunt. The first person to find a song with the word “apple” in it earns the score, while everyone gets to listen to great music.
Thinner than a jewel case, but bearing a simple navigation button and page-flipper controls, the new Sony digital book can hold 160 tomes. Your student can use the built-in dictionary and annotation tools to read textbooks on screen instead of lugging around those thick volumes.
This radio-controlled plane is easy to fly and recharges its batteries quickly. Barnstorm your friends in the student union, or fly it in the quad instead of boring old Frisbee. You can certainly fly it indoors, but try to avoid crash landings.
