Toshiba Makes MacBook Air Look Like a Brick (PC Magazine)

- Calling the Toshiba Portg R500 (SSD) ($2,599 direct) an ultraportable is an understatement.

It's almost inconceivable that a laptop can sport a 12-inch screen and a full-size keyboard and yet weigh only 1.7 pounds (yeah, you read that right). Of course, several adjustments had to be made over the previous iteration of the Portg R500 to get to this astonishing weight.

When the Portg R500 launched last year, it was, at 2.4 pounds, far and away the lightest laptop in its class to integrate an optical drive. By ditching the optical drive, Toshiba has achieved an unprecedented 1.7-pound chassis; the R500 (SSD) is a worthy rival to the MacBook Air and the ThinkPad X300. It isn't as sturdy as those two systems, and, at $2,699, it's a pretty hefty purchase, too.
