Digital Cameras : Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH - Blue

A great little camera. Like another reviewer I "never leave the house without one." I have been able to capture images that I would have missed as I would not be carrying my larger and heavier camera.
Like any camera, a tripod should always be used. However, carrying a tripod with a camera this small somewhat defeats the utility of carrying this camera. (Maybe I'll get a monopod).

I bought one for my 18 y/o daughter, who has not had a camera before. It's simple, straightforward and reliable to use. After trying it out for a month she took it on an Arctic expedition for five weeks. Tiny enough to be carried in a warm pocket - she didn't miss a photo and there were no problems with cold batteries etc. Nor fumbling with cold fingers. One battery lasted four weeks and 350 pix including video and live review. She took a spare. And quality? Take a look at some of the images she came back with, on Flickr (search for shimmer2's photostream or for Canon and Svalbard)

I love this camera. I've had it for four months and use it almost everyday. I use it for going out on the town, parties, scenic shots of flowers and plants, passing traffic (blur effects) and I use it to snap images when something around me inspires. There's an auto setting, manual, macro, portrait, night snapshot, color accent, color swap (very cool), indoor, kids and pets, sunset, foliage, snow, beach, fireworks, aquarium, and undewater. Each setting is customizable.

My only beef is that when using this camera in low light conditions, the flash does its job too well. I like a more natural pic and wish I could adjust the firing of the flash to be less intense. Also, the image stabilization (IS) is less than perfect and still allows some shaky shots.

Don't just buy this camera as a point-and-shoot. There are other cameras out there for much cheaper which serve that purpose. Spend some time with the owner's manual, test the different settings out on the same object to get a feel, and enjoy. Hide Full Review

This was our first digital camera and we are very, very satisfied with it. Amazingly easy to use to do the basics and very easy to start going beyond the basics. Less than a year into digital photography we had two photographs aired on national TV. I would strongly recommend this as a starter camera. Hide Full Review
