Cell Phones : D-Link V-Click Wi-Fi

This fully integrated GSM/WiFi/Voip portable phone does the basic extremely well; have a seamless integration of GSM and Voip with excellent sound quality. There is also a mini Opera browser that is essential to login into some WiFi hotspots (that non-browser phone like Netgear's cannot) and the form factor is ok; not a Razr but not a bulky PDA.

Since D-Link has yet marketed this brand-engineered Taiwanes phone (made by Wistron Neweb), I bought the French version branded for mobile operator Neuf Twin. The D-Link has an announced retail price of $599 but I got the Neuf Twin for about €200 plus s&h. Since I speak French, the instructions were no problem for me.

I put a T-Mobile SIM card in and set up parameters for a Voicepulse Asterisk pre-paid VOIP account and things are rocking. Once you have logged into a hotspot and the VOIP parameters are established, just dial the 10 digit number; if you press [Talk], the phone first dials via VOIP, and, as a backup, GSM; you can also press [select] and then choose whether you want to use GSM or Voip networks. It's like having a two-line, two-network mobile phone.

Battery life is only ok, as WiFi drains power rapidly (even with PDA's) so I use WiFi when I want to set up a temporary office somewhere and can plug in the charger; otherwise, I just use GSM Hide Full Review
