Panasonic takes digital television to astounding new levels with its new Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology projection monitor. Its 52-inch (diagonal screen measurement) 16: 9 screen displays extraordinarily brilliant, razor sharp digital television (1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i) images in a whole new light. A new "prismless" optical engine and second-generation Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) chip improve brightness to 800 cd/m2 (2.5 times the brightness of Panasonic's previous model) and make possible an incredible contrast ratio of 1000:1 (2.5 times that of previous model). Other new features include innovative motion-compensation 3D noise reduction circuitry, a digital visual interface (DVI) and exceptional BBE High-Definition Sound.
By incorporating Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology, which was developed by Texas Instruments, Inc., Panasonic sets a new performance standard for rear projection monitors. At the heart of this technology is a tiny optical semiconductor chip called a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD). The surface of the DMD chip is made up of approximately one million independently controlled microscopic mirrors, each representing one pixel. Responding to a digital signal, the mirrors change angles and switch on and off, hundreds of thousands of times per second, to produce a high resolution, 1280 x 720 picture.
Designed to deliver the full impact of high-resolution digital images from a multitude of sources, Panasonic's model PT-52DL52 is equipped with a DVI jack for direct digital input of RGB signals from set-top boxes and PCs. This high-performance interfacing solution helps to enhance picture quality by minimizing the data transfer distortion that can occur during conventional analog transfer, such as when converting to VGA, and enables the transmission of streaming digital video signals from a personal computer to a television monitor.
The PT-52DL52 is also equipped with a PC input and XGA resolution display capability, enabling it to serve as an ultra-high resolution PC monitor. Previously utilized to enhance only standard definition signals, new motion-compensation 3D noise reduction circuitry is now applied to the rapidly moving pictures delivered via high definition 1080i and 720p signals. The circuitry analyzes the incoming signal and compensates for motion blur, producing clear, crisp images free of noise and degradation.
BBE High-Definition sound provides true linear phase correction and dynamic amplitude compensation, improving speech intelligibility and the dynamic range of musical passages, giving music a realistic, "live" presence. The PT-52DL52 has four built-in speakers for enhanced audio enjoyment.
The set also features two built-in NTSC tuners with split-screen display (HD/SD). A 3D Y/C digital comb filter accurately separates color information from black-and-white information, and eliminates dot crawl as well as horizontal and vertical hanging dots.
A high-contrast, surface diffusion panel provides distortion-free, corner-to-corner brightness and clarity from almost any viewing angle.
The PT-52DL52 is equipped with three-component (Y, PB, PR) video inputs, four A/V input jacks, four S-Video inputs, two RF inputs, A/V program out and variable audio out.
Design-conscious consumers will also be impressed by the PT-52DL52's startling good looks. Looking nothing like a traditional projection TV, it is surprisingly compact at only 17.7 inches deep. Its metallic and black cabinet makes an elegant statement in any room setting. The PT-52DL52 weighs just 108 lbs.
