What is a good universal remote? - mad dog in the fog These are the features that I'm looking for: - able to control my TiVo, DVD player, CD player, etc. from one remote - I want to be able to have all of my electronics in a media closet, so the remote needs to have Radio Frequency (RF) operation. In other words, I shouldn't have to point the remote at the device. - Customizable touch screen - Simple design. I hate cluttered remotes. Ideally I'm looking for answers from someone who already owns a remote that has these capabilities. I'd also appreciate any feedback from anyone who has researched these types of remotes.

Best Answer: What you are describing is a Phillips Pronto or one of its variations (i.e. Marantz). The Pronto Pro / Marantz RC9200 are available with an RF accessory kit. I suggest going to the Remote Central website and downloading the ProntoEdit software. Play with ProntoEdit and see if you like it. There is no good instruction manual to explain ProntoEdit and it may take you awhile to figure out. Only the high end Pronto’s (around $1000) offer the RF accessory kit. A simpler and less expensive option would be to get a regular Pronto and a Wireless Remote Extender. RadioShack sells Wireless Remote Extenders for about $50.
