On May 1, 2003, SBC began offering Basic - S and Expert Plus promotions (defined below) in all regions except for the Northeast. Midwest Speed Tiers changed from 384 Kbps - 768 Kbps to 384 Kbps - 1.5 Mbps, and from 1.5 Mbps - 3 Mbps to 1.5 Mbps - 6 Mbps. Any Members with the original Speed Packages of 384 Kbps - 768 Kbps or 1.5 Mbps - 4 Mbps in the Midwest. The following products were added to all regions. Static IP Low Speed (up to 384 Kbps) Dynamic IP High Speed (1.5 Mbps - 6.0 Mbps) On March 25, 2004, SBC began offering the 1.5 Mbps - 3 Mbps Expert product for both Consumer and Business and discontinued offering the 1.5 Mbps - 6 Mbps Speed Tiers Product in all regions except in the Northeast. On April 26, 2006, SBC began offering the Speed Tiers Elite product in all regions. The new speed tier is 3.0 Mbps - 6.0 Mbps with both Static and Dynamic IP capabilities. The product name is DSL Elite, available at 6500 ft (CO) and 8500 ft (RT). This product is available to both business and residential consumers. This offering allows SBC to compete with cable TV companies and to match products that are being offered with FTTX (Fiber to the Home) speeds. Once you order for SBC (actually AT&T now) DSL, you would be provided with the equipments that you would be needing for your DSL Internet connection (such as the dsl modem, filters, data and ethernet cables) so you won't be needing to buy them. But if you are planning to connect several computers to the internet the you would need to buy a router for that or you can also tell the agent that you would be needing the 2wire modem/router (also capable of wireless connection) because you would be setting up several computers. I'm not sure if you're gonna be charged for this kind of modem/router though. I would have been able to provide how much their service meight cost for you if you only provided what city and state you are in. But for pricing and billing inquiries,I suggest you call this number 1 888 792 3751, this is their number for orders and 1 866 722 9246 for their sale department. i have sbc/yahoo dsl and it uses both cable and phonelines. per month i get charged around 39 bucks for both internet and phone line. its a good deal so that the phoneline isnt busy everytime someone is trying to call the house. for the dsl speed im not so sure but it works pretty fast compared to my old 56k dial-up. :) - lai_dimples
Generally the ISP does provide you with the equiptment. Is it fast? Depends. In my area we have bellsouth for DSL and its slow. So we use cable. So it depends on how close you are into the city. If cable is avaliable it will be faster. If you are used to dial up anything will be faster. DSL is a very high-speed connection that uses the same wires as a regular telephone line. - wspsteph
SBC, i.e., AT&T Yahoo is DSL and DSL is just that, it doesn't come with dial up it is always on, and that is through the phone lines. There are cable companies that offer DSL service and they have their good and bad with them. You won't need any equipment because whomever you subscribe with gives it to you, your best bet is to research prices and see which one you can afford. SBC/AT&T has a promotion right now for $12.99 a month for the first year. - foursquaremommy
The speed of your DSL depends on which type you choose. DSL uses phone lines. DSL is better than cable high-speed because it is a constant. If you are the only person on your block with cable, your speed will be as fast as DSL, but if 10 people on your block have cable, the cable signal gets slower and slower the more people tap into it. - Bronwyn
