godsmercy44 Can I record a Sony 8mm (non digital) camcorder tape to a DVD recorder? - godsmercy44
Best Answer: The short answer is Yes. If you have a Camcorder that plays the 8mm Tapes there are several options. The one I would go with, especially if you do not plan to Edit, and you have numerous tapes, is purchasing a DVD Recorder. They run for about $100-$200 at most Stores. With this you will be able to plug your camera, or anything else for that matter, up to your DVD Recorder, insert a blank DVD, and press Record. Another possibility is getting an adaptor to plug your camera into your computer. Those run roughly the same price, though you will be able to store the footage on your computer to do stuff later with it. Also with this option you will have to have a DVD Burner on your computer (most new ones come with this), and some type of capture software. Most Windows PC's come with MovieMaker and Most Mac's come with some version of IMovie. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. blakegadams@yahoo.com - blakegadams
Your Hi-8 tapes are in analog, so you will need to convert them to digital before you can transfer the video to your computer or DVD recorder. What you will need is a video converter (aka. analog to digital converter or capture device) like the ADS DVD Xpress DX2 ($130) or the ADS Video Xpress ($40) - See links below. The Video Xpress (the cheaper one) uses software to convert the video, which will work fine if you are sending it to your computer. But if you are connecting to a DVD recorder you will need the DX2. Also, the DX2 will give you better video and it has a feature that is supposed to make sure that the audio and video are in synch when converted to digital. You should connect your Hi-8 Camcorder to the video converter using a S-Video cable rather than the RCA cables (red, yellow, white) because the quality will be higher. If you are sending it to your computer, you would then use a USB cable to connect the video converter to the computer. Both of those video converters come with DVD/movie editing software so you won't have to purchase anything else.
