Ariel C Splice ethernet cable 3 ways? - Ariel C Well i was thinking if it is possible to splice an ethernet cable 3 ways. For example i know how to make a crossover ethernet cable where you simply connect the green wires to the orange ones inside of the cable, but i was wondering if you can somehow splice a third cable in there. The reason is to see if it is possible to have some kind of homemade router/networking tool. If you have trouble figuring what i mean take a look at this example i made where (A) is the part where the third ethernet cable is spliced in.http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i215/chupamelchile/splice.jpg If you know this is possible please let me know, thanks in advance
Best Answer: Two problems. One it won't carry the signal correctly. Two you need a router if you want more than one computer connected to the Internet. Your cable, however well crafted, will not assign an IP address to the 3rd device ever. The first computer that boots up with a network card enabled will get the only IP address. You would run into this issue with a switch also. - Jag
You need to use a Hub or switch for this. Ethernet is a bus based topology. If you are familiar with the predecessors to 10/100 Base T -Thick net and Thin Net and the way they daisy chained the PC's...think of the hub or switch as a very compressed daisy chain. - Bopped
no, it would cause so many errors it would be beyond useless. you need a Router, Hub, or Switch You can buy a 4 port switch at most video game stores for around $20, Im sure that will work much better. - imre_14_2000
buy a router or a switch, you cant splice that cable 3 ways - Ryan E
good luck just try it..i don't think it will work...you can use a splitter...but are you talking about actually cutting open the coax? and messing around with wires? not sure - angelstarszzzz
