John T Internet Connections- FCC regulations? - John T I have used both a wireless and hardwire connection for broadband internet. I realize that my broadband connection has a limit of 100MBPS. I also realize that T1, T2, or T3 connections are much faster. My wireless operates at 54 MBPS. I experience more lag and freeze ups watching streaming video with the wireless. My question...Are the wireless connections limited by FCC regulations or is the slowness just a product of the technology? Also...Since my wireless runs at 54MBPS with a 100MBPS broadband connection, would the wireless run faster with a T1 connection to the router, or are there FCC limitations?
Best Answer: I have a wireless G connection going on right now and I have absolutely no trouble reaching 1.8-2.2 Megs per second, In other words I can easily preview a 5 min piece in full 1080P HD quality. Before I purchased this router, I had a Wireless N router and I was able to reach some 6.6-6.7MPS !!!, a few weeks later it Burned out on me =)) long story short I went with wireless G, dousnt get hot and hasn't given me a single hiccup yet, NOT one! I dont know what kind you have but I know this one I have is one of the most reliable (affordible) router on the market now: http://cgi.ebay.com/Linksys-WRT54G-WRT54G2-Wireless-G-Router-WiFi-802-11g_W0QQitemZ370167537357QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCOMP_EN_Routers?hash=item562fb45ecd&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Google the wrt54g2 and read what people say about it. I think its your internet provider that is responsible, as a matter of fact the FCC attacked a few major Internet providers because they where advertising something like 10 megabytes per second while people where getting like 1 megabyte per second in real world use. I dugg up some links for you to catch up on, right from the front lines of the current war with the ISP's and the FCC: http://www.savetheinternet.com/archive/2008/02/25/comcast-blocking-first-the-internet-now-the-public/ http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/01/08/comcast-could-receive-hefty-fcc-fine-for-throttling-bit-torrent/ http://www.savetheinternet.com/archive/2008/08/01/historic-victory-for-net-neutrality/ http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2007/11/comcast-hit-with-class-action-lawsuit-over-traffic-blocking.ars Arrr Mann the oars Maitee! You can test your real internet speeds here: http://www.auditmypc.com/broadband-speed-test.asp and this one is really highly recommended to test your Real world speed here(DO NOT ABUSE to much =): http://performance.toast.net/ -
Wireless technology is driven by what is allowed by the FCC. Your G modem has a top of about 54 Mbps (drops with distance) and if you would like to go faster N should be explored. Any aerial connection is subject to interference, so it is to be expected that quality will be slightly worse. T-1=1.544 Mbit/s T2=6.312 Mbit/s T3=44.736 Mbp/s (wikipedia) T standards are industry standards with minimal FCC interference. Unless your reception is not great (check status of your network card) You outperform anything your ISP is willing to pipe into your laptop. So upgrading your connection will not help. Checking interference and maybe switching to an N router may.
Well for one thing you shouldn't use wireless for steaming video or gaming, it has a latency problem. Meaning it is slower then using broadband cable. That might be your problem. I suspect that your computer might be slow as well. As far as FCC ruling, I do not think that there are any rules on wireless or cable as far as speed might go. Depending on who is your ISP, they might be limiting the speed because of the heavy resources used by you. I know Comcast, Cox, Time Warner Road Runner limit the speed of heavy downloader's. - dick_bee_bad
''Fast Ethernet" is faster than T1etc~ oO so..yea maybe they have to hold back on it because of the price you pay. lol
