aliandna1 Taking photos through the LCD of a Digital SLR Camera? - aliandna1 Hi there I have just pruchased a Nikon D40 SLR. I have had a FujiFilm 6900 for years and have just upgraded. Is it not possible to take photographs with the D40 through the LCD screen. If you can how do you turn it on. I know I'm probably being dense but I just assumed that it would work the same as non-SLR cameras. I mainly use the viewfinder to take photos but I find the LCD useful when doing close-up photography or using a tripod. Many thanks Nathan
Best Answer: No. Nearly all DSLRs only show the image on the LCD after you've taken the photo. No light is falling on the detector until the mirror flips up with you press the shutter. Just like an SLR. there are advantages and disadvantages to this type of operation. you've found one of the disadvantages. Olympus makes DSLRs that offer a real-time LCD output. You might want to look at them. Check out the E410 or E510. They really are excellent cameras. - Morey000
Not on your camera but Olympus just came out with the E-410 and E-510 that have live image view. It's not as good as the point and shoot live view, but it'll help you when you're in a pickle trying to get the right focus, angle, ect. However the longer you use it, the hotter and noiser the sensor gets. - Button
I just got a Canon DSLR, and it seems that the LCD is only for reviewing the pics, you must use the viewfinder for taking the pics. If you want to use the LCD for taking pics, you should get a point and shoot. - Lori J
