Johnny Truant Recording from simultaneous cameras? - Johnny Truant I want to set up multiple digital video cameras in my apartment and save the footage on a wireless hard drive. Is it possible to do this with the cameras all recording simultaneously? What soft/hardware is recommended?
Best Answer: What is your budget? Seems to me the EASIEST would be to get a multiple camera DVR surveillance system... 1, 4, 8, 9 and 16 cameras, I think. The DVRs can be programmed to always record full motion - or only when a motion-sensor area (or alarmed area) causes a trigger. For example, my cameras are set to take a still once every 4 seconds unless the motion area detects motion - then the recording goes to full motion for the duration the motion is sensed and 15 seconds after the motion stops. Here are some low-end units: http://shop4.frys.com/search;jsessionid=cTccFe0roYUhzFRkmpCnOQ**.node3?cat=-45930&pType=pDisplay The good systems (with good pan/tilt/zoom, and high quality video among other features) are not normally in "homeowners kits" because they need to be custom installed. You don't use a "camcorder" to do this. These Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras are "mid range"... The DVR just becomes part of the LAN, so if there is wireless connectivity to that, then you can get to the video wirelessly. If what you are referring to are "wireless cameras", be aware that they still need power (hence a wire), they are only sending video (and sometimes audio) wirelessly to a base station (which connects to the DVR). - Nu'uanu
