elouie144 What happens if I use a 1000+W PSU and I only use like 600W? - elouie144 I'm planning on getting a computer case that has 1200W PSU but scared if I only use 600W, what would happen?? Would it just use 600W from the PSU only or would it use the full 1200W? And also would it make my electricity bill go extremely high?
Best Answer: It would only use 600W and nothing else will happen. As it only uses as much watts as it needs, there's no reason to believe your electricity bill would go any higher than the current bill. Take a quick look at this Q&A 'Power Supply Myths'. http://www.pcpower.com/technology/myths/ I recommend reading the other questions as well since you seem to be searching for a power supply. It will be fine just like the other guys said, but in reality you dont even need that much. According to the benchmarks, a loaded system with the most power hungry core 2 extreme, 8800gtx graphics cards, and everything else you can think of only used 380 watts. The reason you do want that better psu is because the higher the rating the more reliable it will be. It will put out much more stable voltage than if you has a psu close to the watts you were using. - Doggzilla
If you're willing to fork out for the higher spec PSU then overrated is definitely better. It's just headroom for the occasional spike. Just lost a computer to a suspected dodgy PSU and it ain't fun. - JA
A power supply will only output the amount of power it's being asked for. It's not a case of the PSU is pushing the power out. It's how much is drawing power from it. It'll use 600W and will probably use slightly less power than your old PSU as it shouldn't get as hot so it'll be wasting less power as heat. - Ebilan
