tychonde Does a Socket 940 work in a soket A motherboard? - tychonde I have an ASUS A7V8X-x motherboard and i need to upgrade the CPU. I went to a CEX shop and the guy said that a Socket 940 would still work? Is this correct? Thanks verry much
Best Answer: Hello, (ANS) When dealing with computer hardware the main thing to understand is that its ALL about compatibility. If you understand that motherboard X has to be compatible with CPU Y then that makes life much easier to understand. TIPS. **With a motherboard you need to know precisely what the speed of the FRONT SIDE BUS or LOCAL BUS is. Why? because the speed in mega hertz of the local bus determines the speed of the overall system and this includes the CPU. for example if the local bus speed is only 1500hrtz then there is no point in having a CPU that runs faster than 1500, its a waste of money and gives you zero advantage. So only buy a CPU that matches the maximum local bus speed of your MB. **The next thing you need to know is what the precise socket type is for a give motherboard. Why? knowing the socket type means you can then match the CPU to that socket type. **If you don't match the CPU & socket & MB then you could end up spending a lot of money only to later find the processor wont physically fit or wont work. **Socket & CPU & MB must ALL match very precisely, the pin outs must be sympathetic to make a good fit & to work together. **A quick web search shows that some of the ASUS motherboards do support or have socket 940 but I couldn't identify your specific MB though. My guess and it is just a guess is that it probably does. You still need to check with ASUS though in my opinion, you could contact them or look on the Asus website. Sorry! I cannot be more accurate for you though. SEE: http://uk.asus.com/ Ivan. - Ivan R
No, not correct. Socket A processors have 462 pins and fit into a slot with 462 holes. You are not going to fit 940 pins into 462 holes!!! Had you thought about upgrading the motherboard, CPU and memory all together? It's more complicated but the result will be much better. - Alan_B
He may have been thinking about socket AM2, which also uses 940 pins, but it's still incompatible. The guy is just dumb. - cypheron
do you mean 939? either way it will not work, infact it shouldn't even fit. if you do that you'll screw up both your cpu and motherboard - evan r
