radeon4921 Installing more RAM? - radeon4921 I'm planning on installing 2 more GB of RAM into my system, but I was wondering is it ok to use 2 different brands of RAM (both DDR2) in the same computer?
Best Answer: Good idea...installing more memory in a PC is one of the greatest ways to get an increase in performance, and also one of the cheapest. Here are some tips for you. 1 - Only installing double the amount of RAM you currently have...if you have 2GB, go for an additional 2GB for around 20-35% performance increases 2 - Check you motherboard compatability... you are using DDR2 ram, which suggests that up to 8GB will be fine, but there's no harm in checking (loo you make and model of motherboard up online) 3 - Will your operating system handle it? If you are running a 32bit installation of Windows and such, no more than 3.4GB will be recognised, running 64bit will resolve this. 4 - Is you HDD large enough to handle a larger pagefile? Your Pagefile should be 2.5 times he size of physical RAM for best performance. Hope these tips have helped. - DieselLives
Yes it is, but the more important part is making sure they both will fit in your computer and you are careful when installing them. Here is and instructional video on how to safely upgrade ram. NOTE: ram and memory are the same thing. (If you already knew that, then great, if not, then that's why I put it there so you can know what it means when the video refers to memory instead of ram.) http://youtube.com/watch?v=wWqiv8ag0s4 - God of the Trumpet
You want to match speeds of the DDR2 as well, or they all will run at the slower set's speed. Not a major problem, but if you spend much money for faster ram, it is a disappointment to spend that money and not do anything major for your system... - Mark N
It's ok to add RAM of different brand as long as their speed is thesame. Before you buy be sure to see the one installed. It is written on one of its side in Mega hertz unit. As slong as they are thesame DDR2 they can be compatible. - Alex G
It all depends on the motherboard. What is the maximum it can support and what speed? Read the specs first. Also make sure both are of the same speed, other wise if you install a fast one with a slow one it will only run the slowest speed for both. Two different brands wont matter at all - Belarus
it should be allright to install another 2 gig, so long as your processor can hold that much and you do actually have ddr2 ram that you are installing - Peter A
Just be carefull, adding too much ram might malfunction even if your using the right type, even the computer technician at the shop was baffled, just go half way. - mikeronson@ymail.com
