Question and Answers

Can I put a subwoofer up high instead of on the floor? - I just got a new surround sound system for my home theater. But there isn't a great spot for the subwoofer. Can I put it high on the shelf next to the projector at the back of the room? Or would that ruin the acoustics?
Best Answer: It's actually a great idea to slightly raise your subwoofer and speakers off the ground. If done properly this serves to decouple them from the floor, and reduces energy transfer and vibrations/resonance. Will make them sound much better. However from what I understand you are wanting to put it several feet up, resting on a shelf. Which would be undesirable. Unless the shelf were very well built and sturdy, and quite deep with lots of air space around it (as a previous answerer stated you want it several inches out from the wall). Hope this helps, and good luck finding a place, also if you aren't renting and have a little money, you could look into an in-wall sub which I've heard good things about, but never had the pleasure of experiencing (yet) - Lucky
Best placement of subwoofers are at corners or place 3-5 inches from a wall. They are none directional speakers. Due to the weight and size of subwoofer along with the vibration it is not recommend to place them high that they might fall off. - bbt91945
I guess you could put it up high, but it would probably work best acoustics wise to keep it on the floor. It would not ruin the sound if you put it up high, but because its facing horizontally and up high, it could sound worse than on the floor. I suppose you could put it at an angle though. Make sure if you go through with putting it up high to weight it down so it won't fall! - mazzmajazz
