mayawizard1988 I have a 42" plasma 1080i tv. And i wanted to know if Blu-Ray will work with it? i keep getting mixed answers.? - mayawizard1988
Best Answer: Blu ray will work with any flat panel TV. I can see why you are confused, you got tons of answers that are full of half truths and just plain wrong numbers. First, know the true native resolution of your TV. It is most likely not a 1080i plasma. Why do I say that? Because 1080i plasmas were/are very rare. Only two that I know of have actually existed, and they were not your standard 1080x1920 lines. Someone mentioned that your set is only 1380 lines instead of 1920? I have no idea where they got that number. 1080i plasmas (the two that I know of) one was a hitachi that was 1080x1280 a very weird and rare panel. The other is a Sanyo that is 1080 by 1365 or something. Many get 1080i confused with their set because it is compatible or will accept 1080i. So I'm guessing you have a 720p plasma, those can be several things. 1024x768 1280x720 1366x768 Those are the most common, all range from 750k to about 1 million pixels. 99% of blu rays are full HD (1080p) that's 2 million pixels. So you will not see every bit of detail from blu ray with your TV. It will look better than DVD no doubt, but it will most likely only show about half the pixels that a full 1080p set will show. Putting your TV aside for a moment. don't spend money on DVDs, they are on the way out. DVD won't be gone right away, it will linger, but it's on the way out. HDTVs are now the bulk of TVs being purchased, how many people buy a regular tube TV anymore? Cable and SAT have full HD lineups, not to mention free over the air HD. I just picked up a cheapo 128 dollar blu ray player at wal mart for my HDTV, and the picture blows HD cable way, it's amazing. almost forgot, when connecting a blu ray player, set the resolution to 720p or 1080i depending on what res your TV set actually is. Not all non 1080p sets can accept a 1080p signal. - Sound Labs
Blurays players will work with any TV out there, even the non HD ones. 1080i and 1080p isnt much of a difference, your bluray movies will look as good as full HD. 1080i is interlaced 1080p is progressive. Not much of difference in picture quality unless you have a really good vision and can notice a fly from 100 feet away. Trust me it will work. - Helsenki
Yes it will it will be a great awesome picture!! just make sure you use a good HDMI quality cable to the input of your tv - nas88car 300 #2 wins#5 is closer
Yes Blu-ray will work with your 42" plasma. It would probably work with any old tube tv too. However, if your set is 1080i then most likely the true native resolution is 720 (1280 X 768). So if you were to ask will I get maximum benefit out of a blu ray on my 42" plasma then the answer would be no. The only way to get maximum benefit would be from a 1080p set. - gkk_72
I have a 40" HDTV and I didn't notice a huge difference between my $70 upconvert DVD player and the $230 BD player I got for Xmas. You have to buy a new sound system to take advantage of the higher quality sound BD offers so I can't speak about that but the difference in picture quality wasn't worth 3x the hardware cost and an extra $5-$10 per movie. I returned my BD player I'm waiting until the price comes down to regular DVD price range. - James E
Yes, your Blue Ray disc player will work, but you won't get the full benifit of the the 1080P. 1080i is only 1380 lines versus 1980 lines. - bbt91945
