satty waht is the difference between olympus 14-42 mm lens and canon's 18-55 lens.? - satty My point of interest is landscape . which one will give better result.
Best Answer: I take it as you are choosing between Olympus 4/3 system and canon Rebel lineup? Because each lens you describe only mounts on a respective body, you can't put Oly lens on a Canon or vice versa... As to landscape usability, they are nearly equivalent. To compare the lenses in comparable terms let's convert them to 35mm equivalent. Olympus system has 2x magnification, so multiplying by 2, we get 28-84mm in 35mm equivalent. Canon's multiplication factor is 1.6x, hence: 28.8-88mm in 35mm equivalent. So, for landscape you want a good wide angle. The Olympus lens has slight advantage there, but so slight, that I would really not consider it a factor. On the long end, Canon is a bit further reaching, but again, at this level 88 and 84 are also so close that it becomes a non issue. What I see as yet again only slight advantage to Canon - it uses 2:3 side ratio in the frame - same as 35mm film. Olympus uses 4:3, which is same ratio as standard television uses. Since you are going to be doing landscape work, I think it's more beneficial to use the longer 2:3 ratio, but again, since nobody has banned cropping yet - it is just a matter of convenience and habit (I used 35mm film before, so 2:3 is more natural to me - may not be to you). Last but not least - if you are to do some serious landscape work, neither lens is a great landscape lens, you will want something much wider, hopefully able to cover 16 or 18, or at least 20mm in the film equivalent. So you may want to see what other wide angle lenses are available for each system and compare them as well. Maybe not for today (these are expensive), but eventually, when you are ready to invest in a wider lens - make sure there's going to be one available! Again, when you are looking at the lenses, multiply Olympus focal lengths by 2, and Canon by 1.6 to get the 35mm equivalent... Oh, and if your options are open, why not also consider an excellent Nikon lineup - there you'd be multiplying by 1.5 to get the film values! LEM. - LEM
