micseydel (Mac) Time Machine gives "wrong case sensitivity" error? - micseydel I made a Time Machine backup of my Mac. I then reformatted the Mac. (I had good reason for this, but it's irrelevant to answering my question.) Now I want to restore the backup. When I got to do it, I get an error that says "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup." I don't know that the previous filesystem was exactly the same, but both installations used the default stuff so I see no reason to have this error.
Best Answer: You reinstalled with a different file system then what the back up is. The normal mac file system is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). What you probably reformatted the drive as is Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) or just Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive). You need to reformat your hard drive. You can find what file system your hard drive and back up are by going to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility and click the respective icons. To reformat, once booted from the install disk, click Utilities then click Disk Utility and reformat the drive. - macdudeosx
