Samdash Pentium 4 + Geforce 250 GTS. Will it work? - Samdash Ok, so I have a PC with these specs: Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 1GB RAM, Msi GeForce 7600 GS 256 MB, but my graphics card stopped functioning lately, so I'm thinking of buying a new one. I have enough money for a GF 250 GTS, but i don't know if my CPU can fully use it, since it's quite old. I will add some RAM to my PC, too, but I don't have enough money for a new motherboard and CPU. If it can't be done, could my PC fully use a GF 9600 GT? Thanks.
Best Answer: First off make sure you even have a PCI-E x16 or x8 slot on your motherboard b/c I know some 7600 GS cards can run on the older AGP bus. The P4 should be good with the 9600GT. But, if you can find one, I would recommend the 8600GT b/c it is essentially the same card but re-branded, and the price might be cheaper. Also consider ATI's 4670. Its cheaper, and performance is comparable. They can also come with native HDMI support if you want that. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102854 Using a GTS250 would be unwise b/c your CPU would bottleneck your performance. Instead, use the money you save to upgrade your RAM to 2GB, or just save up for a dual core and a cheap mobo. - VeriChip
Your cpu will struggle to with the 250gts, it should be ok with the 9600gt, you might want to consider getting more ram as 1gb isn't very much at all. I know you say that you cant afford a new motherboard and cpu, but if you really want to notice a diffrence gaming then i'd recommend upgrading your motherboard, cpu, ram and even your psu. Most systems nowadays come with 3-4gb of ram. With the release of the new i7 cpu you might be pleasently surprised with the price of the older core2duo or core2quad cpu's, likewise the price of motherboards supporting these chips have dropped dramaticaly. Look on Ebay lots of ppl are upgrading all the time. The XFX750i sli mobo is only £49.99(brand new) you could pick up a core2duo e6600 cpu for less than £50 on ebay, Ram depends on what you want but probably about £50 as well, psu maybe a bit more again depending on your needs, i'd recommend atleast 600watt, say £50-80, so for almost £200 you could have everything a whole lot better. - Baz Scotland
