how do i do the The Big 3 Upgrade? - so i am going to do the big 3 upgrade for my audio system but im confused on what to really do. ive read forums, watched videos but im still confused. can someone give me step by step directions how to do it? when im doing the big 3 upgrade do i have to get a HO alt.? without the HO alt how much would it cost (i would be using 0 gauge wires) just for reference im running around 1500 watts rms.
Best Answer: When doing a "Big 3" upgrade, it is required to purchase an HO alt. I upgraded my stock 105 amp alt to a 200 amp alt and it really does work wonders. I purchased my HO alt from this web site: http://www.dbelectrical.com/ At the time, I was able to purchase my alt for $230. It could be more expensive now since this was 2 years ago, but who knows. It could be cheaper now. Aside from that, this is how you install the "Big 3" upgrade: http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp~TID~73496~PN~1 Hope this helps! - kaerfpl
Heres a video of the big three. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p82xRzCr-lc&feature=player_embedded You can do the big three with a stock alternator, its very common. It will only cost as much as the wire and terminals. Look here www.knukonceptz.com You are just upgrading the factory grounds in the engine bay, and the positive charge cable from the alt to the batt. - odinsragess
Its better to get a high amp alt. I ordered a 300 amp alt from power bastards.com....To upgrade you run a power wire from the alternator to the battery. then u run a ground wire from the battery to the chasis of the vehicle. Then lastly you run a ground wire from battery to the engine block. I grounded mine to the bolt where the alt is bolted down to the engine. When upgrading u dont have to remove the existing wires. Just add the bigger wire along where they already run. Electric current is gonna follow the path least resistance anyway so the larger wire is where the current is gonna travel. You may also want to upgrade ur battery terminals to be ableto add the extra wires to them. I got the gold plated terminals when i did my upgrade. Also dont forget to fuse the bigger power wire to battery from alt if you go with a bigger alt. - highjumper205
