Question and Answers

jeffrey g With a Tivo Series 2 DVR, can I use a cable card? - jeffrey g I have an HDTV-ready TV and TimeWarner cable. Will it work? Will I be able to record HD signals or do I need to buy a Series3 or HD to get that? Will I be able to record basic cable shows still? If so, is the only advantage to avoid the ugly cable box and the monthly cable company fee? I don't care about losing OnDemand and pay per view functionality.
Best Answer: Hi Jeffery, No, TiVo does not offer cable card slots on the series 2. The price has dropped on the series 3 which does support cable cards. You can record basic TV shows without the cable cards. I don't have them in my series 3 because I don't use on demand or pay per view. I feed the cable directly into my TiVo and I get all the channels and can record two at once. The TiVo community store had a series 3 for $579 and a new TiVo - HD for $299. I believe the few cable companies that have signed agreements with Tivo to offer cable card functionality have only agreed to supposed the Series 3 HD Tivo Boxes. And yes cablecard is a one way communication device so you would not have access to Pay Per View, On Demand, or your Interactive Guide to see what's playing. - tinygnome29
