hayley second question about allied telesis gigabit ethernet? - hayley Ok more importantly that what it is exactly, does it mean that I have 2 network connections? it says it is unpluged how would i plug it in? and why would there be two? it is not like the internet company installed 2 connections when they came out to give me an internet connection right? my other connection is intel , but it a high speed cable connection.
Best Answer: All Gigabyte Ethernet connections have very limited range. It was developed to use in a server application connecting many servers together where the distance between servers would be a few feet. Since your high speed Internet may be 12 mbits your Intel card would be the one to use as it is a 10/100 card. Since you have two Ethernet cards one on the mother board and one it a slot your computer does recognize both connections. - Curtis
Believe it or not, a lot of higher end motherboards have two ethernet connectors built in. If you aren't using them both then one is of course unplugged. It doesn't matter if you don't need it. If you'd like it to stop telling you that one is unplugged then disable it. You can do that in "network connections" then right click on it and click disable. You certainly don't need gigabit ethernet for an internet connection. It is nice if you move gigantic files around your home network but otherwise you don't need it. Contrary to the last poster's opinion gigabit ethernet (with good cabling) can make very high speed connections over at least 50 ft. I know only because I have set mine up and measured transfer speeds and it is no problem. - jds792
