Is this a fairly good gaming pc? Is there something I have forgotten? Is there something I could do to save money or better the system for little extra?
Best Answer: It's an OK gaming PC. Keep in mind that the 8600GT is alright, but might require upgrading in the future. At that point the 450W generic power supply installed may not be enough (power supplies output less wattage/amps as they age. Generics aren't as efficient typically). Consider buying a well known brand like OCZ, Thermaltake, or Corsair and getting a 550W or so power supply. You won't need more than 650W. Look for an efficiency rating of 80% or higher. Also you'll need 64 bit Vista for DirectX10 gaming and to use 4GB of system RAM. XP Pro x64 will allow you to use the 4GB of system ram, but limit you to DX9 in games. If you're going to overclock it, you need an aftermarket CPU cooler. Even if you're not going to, you still might want to consider it. The Arctic Freezer Pro is good for ~$25, but if you're looking to spend a bit more, consider the Zalman 9700LED or a Tuniq Tower or Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. Those last 2 are a bit pricy (~$70) and I know the TRUE requires separate aftermarket fans. EDIT: You'll get better performance with the WD SATA300 drive than a Raptor SATA150 drive. A new Velociraptor (SATA 300, 10k rpm) would be faster, but it'd wear out quicker. - tuaamin13
If I were you, I would go for a faster HDD(100000 rpm raptor, for example). I personally prefer the 8800GTS. Also, make sure that your PS is enough for your more power hungry components. - Malcolm
for $40 more you could get a quad core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017 but you'd need a biger power supply, even with that configuration you might here's one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817101029 - Luke F
Yeah everything looks good only suggestion would be go for Intel E8200 as it support 1333mhz bus and has higher L2 cache 6mb in the same price with 2.66ghz. Its new 45nm tech, so produces less heat. The motherboard that you have selected supports it and is good for it. You for got the heart of a gaming system The PSU ( power supply ) Buy a tagan or thermaltake PSU. In case of graphic card please go for a 8800gt or 9600GT . The 8600GT does'nt meet with a lot of new games. - RockyTruelyRox
Make sure that the case comes with fans, you have the cables you need for the hard drive (OEM means no cables!), and some kind of operating system at your disposal. - champers
