benjamin_chu Say I have 2 hard drives. Could I install Windows XP SP2 on one and Linux Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on the other? - benjamin_chu Hard Drive 1: Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB SATA-300 (Windows) Hard Drive 2: Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB Hard Drive SATA-300 (Ubuntu) * I also want to know if I would have any problems booting either OS when I power up my PC.
Best Answer: Sure! And no, there's no problem in choosing what OS to boot up. It's explained here! Install Windows XP first. BE SURE that it makes the two drives separate paritions! Once XP is installed boot up the Ubuntu CD. When it comes to partitioning, make sure you know which one XP is on so you don't delete it. In the later stage of the partitioning it should install the bootloader. The bootloader is a program that starts before your OS and decides what OS to boot up. It should recognize that XP is installed. Now, whenever you turn on your computer, it should give you a few seconds to choose to boot XP or Ubuntu. - john smith
yes, you can. in fact, you could install both os's on one hard drive if you wanted to. all you need is a bootloader to select which os you want to boot to when you start the computer. ubuntu comes with grub bootloader. you'll want to install windows first, and then ubuntu. you'll need to configure the bootloader to boot windows and ubuntu. here are some guides: http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2006/05/08/dual-boot-laptop.html http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_windows_xp_and_linux_xp_installed_first.htm http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installing - mosuke32
Yeah, you can have one on each hard drive. I don't think you'd run into any problems booting into either. - xzxtxyx
You should have no problem doing that, but when your computer starts up you have to push the boot menu shortcut (f something, it depend on computer) It should say it on BIOS splash screen. Then you have to select which HD to boot from. If you dont do this the computer will just boot from the primary HD - I_wonder..
