ejfitzroy Should I sell my laptop and buy a new one, or get a desktop? - ejfitzroy Trying to figure out how to get the best deal for the least money... Here's my situation: I'm going into 2nd year university, film production. I currently have an HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop, almost one year old. It's in good shape and I'm thinking I could sell it for 7-8 hundred dollars. I'd like to get a better computer with at least 512 MB Graphics memory, able to play Age of Conan on medium-high settings with high fps. Option 1: Sell my laptop, buy a new "gaming" laptop... the Gateway P6860 FX is $1349 at Best Buy, so after I sold my HP I'd really have only invested $600 in the Gateway. Option 2: I could buy a desktop instead, and keep my HP Laptop for note-taking and wireless access in class, around campus etc. and use the desktop for gaming and editing. What would you recommend doing? Which desktops would you recommend that are equal to or better than the Gateway for gaming, but won't cost a fortune?
Best Answer: 1. Building a desktop is by far the best option as it's much cheaper. 2. I don't really want to recommend any desktops, because currently, I don't think there are any with the new Radeon 4000 series....build it :D It really isn't very hard, and if you ask here, you will get all the help you need: computerforums.org (I built mine when I was 13...it's like lego) 3. A laptop is a necessity in college, and you need to decide how much money you have to spend, if you have about $800 for a Desktop, you could easily build one that can run Age of Conan. A laptop that can do the same will cost a good chunk more, although the P6860 sounds promising (you need to list the GPU + CPU). Also, never buy anything from Best Buy. Do all your computer shopping online. - Rob S
On old laptops they go down in price value and you aren't going to find anybody to pay for a used laptop of 7-8 hundred dollars for used laptops they would only give you 50 dollars for the laptop .. I think you should buy a desktop computer they are easy to upgrade and they are cheaper to buy parts for ... In my recommending that you buy a dell xps gaming desktop they are the best in gaming or alienware desktops they are the leading gaming desktops on the market and have a lot better ratings of best techonogy in computers.. I have been building computer for almost 6 years and i have been repairing computer for 6 years also i know all about computers and laptops ..... if you have any questions for me email me at metaledgerock@sbcglobal.net my name is jason - metaledgerock@sbcglobal.net
keep the laptop definitely. then get a gaming desktop. build one yourself if you want to save money. that is what i am going to do!! - davidm2232
Get a desktop, keep the laptop unless you can get$700-800 (which I doubt). Go to circuit city or staples. - Jerry J
If you're going to edit a lot of video, opt for a desktop, paired with a good cpu/graphic card it'll give more horsepower than a laptop. If you need to carry the work with you, then get a lap instead. - Wilford_Brimley
I think for something like film production you will need a PC that can is pretty fast and can be upgraded. If you don't need the mobility I would say get a desktop. - Julie L
Get a desktop there a lot faster, and a laptop has more of a chance of overheating =] - jacob h
