Question and Answers

Mark "Illegal Port Number" Port forwarding won't work.? - Mark I've port forwarded many times before but the place I'm staying now uses an SMS/SMC networking router, although when I try to add a port, it simply says, illegal port. What does this even mean? I've tried trying different ports, in the public, private slot. Nothing is working. Any help would be appreciated.
Best Answer: 1. Port could already be in use. In other words, there could already be another port forwarding entry in the router using that port. 2. Some routers already use some ports. For example, if you try to forward port 80, the router may already use this port to be able to access the router's configuration screen. 3. Port numbers are from 1 - 65535. If you try to use a number higher than 65535, it won't work 4. Some routers will only allow you to use ports 1 - 49151, since 49152 - 65535 are normally used for outbound ports. That could also be the reason. - GJneedsanswers
