WiFi adapter help, small and easy problem.? - Hey I was wondering, I'm getting an iPod Touch (maybe) and we don't have WiFi, I was looking and found this adapter: IOGEAR WiFi 54g USB Adapter GWU523 Network adapter. One problem, I got Vista and It only works up to XP, even though I got Vista, can I use it? Thanks. =)
Best Answer: Actually, what you really need is a Wireless Router. If you get a WiFi adaptor, you would need to set up what’s called an Ad Hoc wireless network using Windows Internet Connection Sharing. This is more trouble than it’s worth. A wireless router shouldn’t cost more than about $60 from any computer store and will plug in between your cable/DSL modem and your desktop computer (I’m assuming you have a cable modem or DSL, if you use dial-up, you will have a very different problem to tackle). It will then provide the wireless network that your iPod Touch needs to connect to the internet. Another advantage of getting a router is that it adds security to your computer by putting a barrier (kind of like a firewall) between your computer and the outside internet. This can help protect against a form of virus called a worm (like our recent friend Conficker). Any wireless router you get should come with simple detailed instructions on how to set it up and secure it with WEP or WPA. Follow those instructions so that people cannot access your network without permission. I am a fan of Linksys routers, but Netgear and D-Link also make acceptable (and sometimes more affordable) routers. Good luck! -
