sarmientoatebay My plasma tv takes an optical connection to have external sound. Have a few question.? - sarmientoatebay I have a Maxent 50 inch plasma tv. The only output for external sound is a optical connection. I want the external sound to work for all my media (cable, dvd, xbox, etc.) What sound system would be compatible?
Best Answer: depends if you want to run a switchbox or two, otherwise, make your pick simply on input/output connection types and numbers.. you know what you need, just look for it in your price range.. - dvntjester
most new 5.1 recievers or up would have optical conections Yamaha Sony Dennon Pioneer are all good - Cableguy
If you use the tv's optical out, and you want surround, it won't do it. Tv's optical outs send stereo. Only an antenna connection using the tv's own internal tuner will output surround thru it's optical out. So your best bet is to get a receiver with many optical or dig. coax inputs, and connect all your video cables into the tv. Then connect all your audio cables directly into the receiver. Then you will get surround sound. It will involve changing the input on the receiver as you change the inputs on the tv, but it's worth it for the best sound. - Texperson
Any Receiver that has an optical input.
