Question and Answers

avengerz43 Question about the settings on my powered subwoofer? - avengerz43 I have a powered Boston Acoustics PV1000 subwoofer and I have it hooked up into a Pioneer Elite VSX 84TXSi receiver via a monster cable coax. On the front of the subwoofer there are the following settings: Crossover with incriments of 50,80,120,150. Then Crossover with the options of "SET" or "NONE". And finally Polarity with the settings of "0 degrees" or "180 degrees". I'm a noob to the home theater setup so I was wandering what I should set these too and any settings I may need to make to my receiver to get the optimal performance out of my subwoofer. Thanks
Best Answer: Short answer: Put the crossover setting to NONE. Put the Polarity to zero. BACKGROUND: If you run full-speaker sounds to the sub, it will strip off the low frequency sounds and send the rest onto the left/right speakers. But you are not wired this way. The receiver takes care of the crossover duties so you dont want the subwoofer to 'second-guess' the receiver. Polarity: If you fire up a bass heavy track and disconnect the other speakers, you can waunder around the room and notice some spots where the bass is LOUD and BOOMY and other spots where it is smooth and tight. The Polarity knob can help you shift these spots around. But just moving the sub a few inches along a will has a much greater impact than the Polarity knob so it's kind of useless. ALSO: You want to level adjust the intensity of the sub so it matches the volume of the main speakers. I belive that receiver has auto-calibration. If not - do an internet search for how to use a SPL meter to calibrate your speakers. - Grumpy Mac
