D.L.W listen to audio thru dvd player from tv, both hooked up with HDMI cables? - D.L.W I have a Toshiba flat screen HDTV hooked up to DVR box with HDMI cord. Also have surround sound Phillips DVD player hooked up to TV with HDMI cord. I was wondering how I would go about listening to the audio from the tv thru the surround sound. any help appreciated.
Best Answer: The easiest way is to look for a digital audio output on the DVR. There are two types, the most common is a optical digital output, the other is called a coaxial digital output. You simply connect that to the optical/coaxial input on the surround sound. You weren't exactly clear, I'm guessing you have a philips DVD all-in-one surround sound system? Currently your DVR and DVD player are sending both video *and audio* signals to the TV through their HDMI cable connections, but the DVR is not sending audio to the Philips surround receiver. To hear audio from your DVR on your surround system you will somehow need to get an audio signal from the DVR to the surround receiver. My guess is that you will need to do this: Look for an "auxiliary input" on the back of the Philips combo player. It is probably a pair of circular red and white cables. Connect a red/white audio cable pair - you can buy them at Target or Wal-mart, or take them from an old VCR - from the DVR box to the Philips unit. Then when you watch cable TV use the Philips remote to change to the AUX input and you should hear audio! (Advanced note: If the auxiliary plug is digital optical - black and square - or digital coaxial - round and either orange or black - you can do this same thing but with different cables, also available at your local department store) For playing DVDs just turn down the TV volume as the surround unit should be playing the audio automatically. Connect optical cable from cable box to system for audio. - BANG P
