Question and Answers

joel w How do I run my Computer and play Xbox live at the same time through comcast? - joel w We just switched to Comcast from At&T. Hurray for 12mbps! Boo for one ethernet port on the Comcast modem. So I hooked up my SMC Networks router that I had laying around. But I can only run one device online at a time. It's either the Xbox or the computer. How can I fix this? Thanks!
Best Answer: Turn off your cable modem for 15 minutes and if it has a battery connected to it remove that as well. Go in the web config for your router and make sure that it is properly set up to get an IP address from the cable modem. Connect the ethernet cable from the cable modem to the WAN or uplink port on the router. After the 15 minutes has passed connect the power to the cable modem again. Then go in to the router config and check the status of the router. It should be getting a public IP address. Then you just need to make sure that the DHCP server on your router is running so that it will hand out IP addresses to the computers and devices that connect to it. The cable modem will only hand out 1 IP address and it will remember the MAC address of the last computer or network device that was connected to it. This is why it has to be unplugged for some time. - Sygma6
You can buy a modem that has more than 1 port, I think. I have AT&T, and believe it or not, my friend had comcast with a 6mbps connection, switch to AT&T with a 3mbps and said it was faster than comcast. - Saul Aguilar
