Simple(I think) Networking Question-Please help!? -

So I just changed the old westell modem provided by verizon for a netgear dg348g modem and router. I like to play xbox live, halo 3, whatever. I saw that the modem thing doesn't support multiplayer gaming, but i realized that i already have a netgear rangemax dual band n router that supports it. So I talked to netgear suppport and they helped me configure it so that I could use the wireles router. My xbox 360 is plugged into the wireless router. I can't connect to other people's games and it lags really bad. (When i say cant connect i dont mean i cant as in my nat rule is strict. thats fine).
So I thought that that shouldnt be a problem. But regardless of whether or not my xbox 360 is plugged into the router or modem doesn't matter because the modem then has to configure the signal from xbox live then to the router then through the ethernet cord and to my xbox.
So what I was wondering was if that is right, and if so, what should I do? If I need to get a new modem, what kind should I get?
