Andrew Connecting to a home router/switch? - Andrew I tried to change one of my home routers into a switch so I can use two home routers for more computers. I turned off DHCP on the one that I wished to use as a switch and gave it a new IP address. It was originally 192.168.2.1. I changed it to 192.168.1.102. Now I cannot access it at all. The first router has the IP 192.168.1.1. I have the 'want to be switch' connected from port 2 of the original router into the WAN. Help please? I need to get to its settings but it wont give me a default gateway. A reset does nothing. So I cannot connect to it at all. It says in the Windows 7 task tray "Connected to Unidentified Network, No Internet Access". Its an SMC Barricade home router that I wish to make a switch which is connected to a TRENDnet wireless home router. Thanks!
Best Answer: For the router you want to act as a switch, you need to plug into one of the LAN ports instead of the WAN port. The traffic must be routed to communicate between the LAN ports and WAN port on a router. Plug the cable into port 1 of the router you want to act as a switch and it should work. Double check the link, if you don't get any link lights you may need to get a crossover cable, since you are going from switch to switch. - Bryan A
Turn off DHCP on the Barricade router, but do not give it an IP address, allow it to get one using DHCP from the Trend router. You are correct in connecting the WAN port of your Barricade to the LAN port on the Trend. - jivepacketrat
