It's automatic. Back to your question, lamp capacity is not like a gallon jug with gradient levels indicating how much is left. Lamps operate for an average amount of time of use. And even that average is derived from an 'average' sampling of test lamps. They also don't give any tolerances, such as 2,000 hours plus or minus 500 hours. That's because some lamps can die out in 1,000 hours while another may run for 3,000 hours, but you'd never buy a lamp with such wild tolerances. Bottom line, 'these' days, a lamp should last you maybe 2 years for 5-6 hours a day. But don't be surprised if you only get 1 year. Me, I have one that's going on 3 years with 8-10 hours a day usage. Some people have had lamps burn out as soon as 6 months under normal usage, which shouldn't happen but does. You just don't know. Take the typical 2,000 hours specified for most lamps, divide it by the number of hours a day (typically) that you use it, and you get the number of days it should be good for. And then consider how many days you've already used it, and subtract that. That's what you would 'expect' to have left. But don't be at all surprised if it dies out sooner or lasts a lot longer. By the way, my bulb costs $250 to replace and it's rated for 2,000 hours. I use it about 6 hrs a day, so that means it's good for nearly a year. That's $250 a year or $20 a month to budget for routine 'repair'. As I said, I'm going on 3 years now, so I've already saved enough to buy a new one, with money left over toward the next one after that. (Which might die in only 6 months.) - percival.sweetwater
