PSR How to connect a HP Laserjet 5000 with my Dell Lap top? - PSR I recently got a used HP Laserjet 5000. I did not get any printer CD. The printer has a parallel cable IEEE 1284 port and a RS-232C serial port (9 pin). I have a DELL Inspiron 6000 lap top with me. The lap top has USB connector, video connector (15 pin), IEEE 1394 connector. I will be grateful if any one advises me how to connect the printer to the lap top, which software to be downloaded and installed, which cable to be purchased, any adopter to be used etc.
Best Answer: I'd go for a USB to parallel converter, only a few quid of ebay, amazon, or similar. Can cost a lot from the computer stores though. You need something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-USB-2-0-to-PARALLEL-PRINTER-1284-36-PIN-CABLE-K96_W0QQitemZ270474833768QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item3ef98e6f68 Laserjet 5000 is a well old printer, but they are solid as rocks and could still give years of good service. windows will probably detect the printer, otherwise download the drivers from HP website. - Ian S
You need a USB to serial (RS-232) cable. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Serial-adapter-converter-connect-printer/dp/B000L0UDQA Very cheap! Once you have connected it then Windows should find the driver for it automatically. - steve_loir
Hello, What you need is USB A/B cable. This can be found by going to RadioShack, or any other office supply store. The software you will need to download from HP. The link to HP's website is at the bottom of this page. HP Laserjet 5000 Supplies: http://store.express-inks.com/category_s/206.htm&Click=30566 www.Express-Inks.com - Express-Inks
Try connecting with the USB port with a printer cable, which is the default connector for many computers. If you can't buy one, or there isn't any USB port on your printer (a USB port on printer looks different than one on a computer) then go to the official HP website and search for printer types/models and search for the requirements and software needed. - raymondbl
