28 n K town I have a netgear router and the disk will not run, what should I do? - 28 n K town My router is a couple years old and i have never used it. Tried using it for the first time today and I cant get the disk to run. It acts like its going to, then it flashes a webpage but closes itself really fast. What should I do?
Best Answer: As one who has configured and installed numerous routers over the years, I still find little to NO value of the discs anyway. You need to know this info before you start: 1. If you have DSL, is it PPPoE or IP routing? If it is PPoE, you need the PPPoE user name and password. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can give you this info. 2. If it is CATV or DSL, do you have a dynamic or static public IP address? It is most likely you have dynamic. If you have static, you pay about $15 / mo more for it and you will have been provided a static IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and 2 DNS IP addresses. You can check with the ISP if you are unsure. 3. Is there any reason you need to use a private LAN subnet different from the factory default? Usually this is not the case and if you felt you needed to use a different one, you probably do not need to be writing here anyway, so I will assume you will be ok with the factory default. Now for the install: 1. With router pluged in and on (have no cables other than power cable connected to it), push the factory reset button and hold it in for 15 seconds and release it. Let router warm up for at least 2 minutes after reset. Factory reset buttion is either on back or bottom, has a very small hole (~ 1 mm diam) and needs to be pressed with a sharp, pointed object. Returning router to factory reset clears out any previous setting that may gum up things. 2. Turn off modem and pc. Connect router WAN (or Internet or Public or whatever they call it) port to the Modem internet feed with a straight cat5 patch cable. Connect one router switch LAN port to pc# 1. Do not connect any other. This must be wired. Use a straight cat5 cable. 3. Turn on modem; wait at least 0.5 min and turn on router; wait at least 0.5 min and turn on pc. Allow all devices to warm up fully. 3. Open command prompt (start, run - enter cmd in box and hit enter). At the > prompt in command prompt, type in "ipconfig" without quotes and hit enter. You should be given an IP address, subnet mask, default gateway address. The IP address should be in the format 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x and the default gateway should have the same format with the last digit most likely = 1; the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0. If you have an IP address of 169.254.xxx.yyy you have major problems with the router or the pc; write here and tell us what happend and we can help further - and you may need to check the pc network port so that it is set to obtain IP address automatically. 4. Once you have the proper IP address, minimize command prompt; open Internet Explorer, enter the default gateway IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or whatever it is) in address bar and hit enter. You will be given a user name and password. Usually the user = admin and the password = password once factory default is set. Now you are in the config windows. 5. Go to the WAN or Internet config section. Each router differs so look around to find it. Configure it for dynamic IP address or static if you have static IP address. If static enter IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNs servers. If you have PPPoE, select PPPoE and enter user name and password. Save settings. 6. Go to the LAN configuration setting. Make sure it is set to provide LAN IP addresses via DHCP and make sure the allocated DHCP pool is slightly larger than the number of LAN devices you wish to support (e.g. if you have 4 pcs + 2 other LAN devices you wish to have assigned dynamically, make sure the DHCP Pool has at least 10 addresses in it. There is no wisdom in having a DHCP Pool that is more than 2 times the number of devices you wish to provide dynamic ip addresses to. 7. Open command prompt. Type in "ping " without quotes; where is ip address of default gateway; if default gateway IP is 192.168.1.1, then type in ping 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. You should see 4 successful replies. Now enter "ping 4.2.2.2" and hit enter. You should see 4 replies; if you do not review your WAN config as there is an error somewhere in that part of router config. After that succeeds, type in "ping yahoo.com" and hit enter; if not successful you have a DNS config problem; check router WAN config if you have a static public IP; make sure pc is set to obtain IP address and DNS address automatically and this should fix this. You now have internet. 8. If this is a wireless router, you need to configure wireless. However, now that you have Internet, go to Netgear site and download router manual (it is a pdf) and follow the directions therein. - GTB
You dont need the cd to set up a router. its a ballache but you can do it manually. Is this an ADSL Router do you know? does it plug into a phone line basically? if so, first you need some info from your ISP. VPI and VCI number MTU number Username and Password Encapsulation mode then you open a web browser. click in the address bar. type 192.168.0.1 it will ask for a username/password. user in admin - lower case password is password - lower case too. click okay. look on the blue menu on the left. choose the 2nd option under basic. put in all those isp details in the right places - most should be correct. may only need user/password. look first maybe. click submit at the bottom. give it a sec, then reboot the router- push the on off button or pull the power cable out. your done. :) - mrPhil
You don't need to run the disk to setup the router. There should be a manual on the disk that tells you how to set it up. So Explore the disk rather than Run it. Look for a file called manual. It may be a DOC or a PDF. - steve_loir
