Lots of parents have gladly signed on for DVD players in the car, either portable or built in, so kids can play movies and games to pass time quickly (and peacefully) on long road trips. If you wouldn't leave home for a long trip without something to play on a screen for your kids, how would you feel about having TV available in the car?
It will be a reality in DaimlerChyrsler cars and minivans later this year. For an extra $470, you'll get a full year of satellite TV service in the 2008 models that come equipped with Chrysler's rear seat entertainment system. After the first year, the TV service will cost $7 a month in addition to a Sirius subscription, which is now $13 a month.
The service will include programming from the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and the Cartoon Network. Chrysler promises the 24-hour programming will always be suitable for children.
My kids watch plenty of TV while we're not mobile, so I'm in no rush to add TV stations to our van. Truthfully, I am not looking to add more Disney shows and Cartoon Network to their entertainment repertoire, either in the house or in the van. But my children are older, and I can see this being very tempting to parents of younger children. Maybe too tempting. It would be easy to turn it on for every trip, even the 15-minute trip to the food store, especially at the insistent urging of a demanding 3 year old. And once you've established a TV routine with a toddler, it's game over.
What do you think? Would you like to have a TV entertainment option for the car? Or is it not worth yet another monthly entertainment charge?

Ugh! TV in the car- what happened to playing "Count the Cows", the Liscense plate game, listening to the radio or God forbid just talking to you children!!!! As a society we really have become more and more isolated from our children & their lives with all of these extra gadgets. Parents do not spend enough time with their children as it is, why not use the time in the car for getting to know your child! I SAY NO!! If my neighbors do it, well that's their choice- but I have no trouble telling my children "No"- that's my job- I am the parent! Wake up America! Be the Parent!
