TeleNav is rolling out some new social networking and business reviews features to the mobile GPS service. In addition to being able to use GPS technology to get turn-by-turn directions on your phone with TeleNav, subscribers can alert people via text message to their location. A good add-on for an emergency or for meeting friends.
TeleNav customers who already pay the $9.99 monthly service can easily retrieve a location message and get turn-by-turn directions. Recipients who are not customers will receive a URL that will take them to a web site for a map and static directions. You can send out one location to more than one recipient at a time.
TeleNav's Mary Beth Lowell offers these possible scenarios when the added features could come in handy:
An example of how this might be used is if I am part of a soccer league and the field we had reserved is occupied. I can move to a different field and then share the location with everyone on the team. This saves having to call everyone.
Another example is if my car breaks down and I am not sure where I'm at. Instead of worrying about asking someone driving by or walking to a nearby gas station, I can immediately send my location to my husband and he can come help me.
The new version also includes user-generated restaurant reviews and ratings to help you pick a restaurant on the fly. Note: the new features are only available on a few Sprint mobile phones but will be rolled out to additional carriers and phones later in the year.
Any TeleNav users out there? Let us know if GPS on the phone has been working for you and if these new features sound interesting.
