Amid the many games and web sites for kids that focus on acquiring stuff and decorating rooms and chatting with friends is a PBS web show that gives kids who care about the planet and the environment some ideas on how to make a difference.

It's called "Meet the Greens," and it is designed and written by the award-winning kids' web site team at PBS station WGBH in Boston. The same folks who came up with the popular Curious George web site have put their energy into creating an animated family that uses humor to help point out some things families can do to make changes to benefit the environment.

One episode shows a dad spending his last 20 bucks on gas for the lawn mower and wearing a mask to filter out the fumes and an MP3 player to combat the noise. Izz, his daughter, points out a push mower might be a better solution.

"Through short, pithy animations, we give kids the surrounding context and the ability to find out more and to take action. We're trying to be a little catalytic," says Bill Shribman, the main writer and producer behind "Meet the Greens." They know kids can make a difference in their sphere of influence, the family and with friends. "We're not trying to scaremonger, but we are trying to inform."

"Meet the Greens" can also be found via the PBS Kids Go web site. The creators worked with several well-known environmentalists to develop the webisodes, but the chief educational consultant is Alan Fortescue, director of education for Earthwatch Institute.

Shribman, executive producer of WGBH's Interactive Kids Group and who oversees all WGBH interactive projects for kids, says the team has applied for more grants to add games and other features to the web site, and is working with some schools to include "Greens" within science lessons.

Point it out to your kids the next time they're on the computer and see what kind of conversation and action it sparks in your family.
