Many states are taking a tough stance on high-tech distractions like texting/phoning while driving by introducing cell phone bans. Although these bans are already in place in some states, drivers are putting themselves at risk by blatantly ignoring them. Dory wrote about a recent survey that found 73 percent of 1,200 drivers admitted to using cell phones while driving. Next year, Californians are looking at petty fines if they don't abide by a new driving law that bans cell phone chatter unless drivers use a hands-free device.

That's where an organization called FreeHeadsets.org comes in. These guys have been running a nationwide wireless phone safety program since 2003 by distributing free headsets. Over 150,000 headsets have been given away so far, thanks to all the coverage its gotten from major media outlets like Rachael Ray, New York Times, CBS, and others. Headsets are absolutely free, with the exception of shipping charges which are $3.94.

On the site, you'll find a list of phones supported ranging from Blackberry to Motorola, and all you have to do is find your model. The headsets are the wired type, but you can actually order a Plantronics Bluetooth headset for $24 ($40 off the actual price) if you prefer to go completely wireless. It's a great site to share with family and friends who need a hands-free device.
