Do you take a laptop on vacation? I'm guilty, and according to a top
psychologist in the UK, employees who take their laptops with them on holiday
are stupid and risk family breakdowns. Professor Cary Cooper, a workplace health
expert at the Lancaster University in the UK, says his research shows workers
are afraid to go 'off radar' during their vacation because they don't want to
miss any important emails.
Sounds familiar? It should. Recent polls have shown that one in five people pack their laptop along with their swimsuit, and worst yet, they work and check email while on vacation. If Professor Cooper is right, those mixing work with play are costing the economy millions of dollars because never switching off leads to increased absence, labor turnover, and it affects relationships with family and friends.
But is calling people who take their laptops on vacation "stupid" a little too extreme? Probably. Even if people leave their laptops at home, it's impossible not to check email from your smartphone while on vacation. I think the key here is having some control, so the next time you're away with family or friends, resist the temptation of checking email in front of them or surf the Web when you could be out spending some quality time with the kids.

The Professor is very bias in his submission. What i think the world is a global village and there is no way you can keep yourself abreast of the development in the world without a laptop with you on holiday. The Psychologist is bias.
Don't miss understand the professor. He said don't take your laptop but never said don't take your desktop. Well.. The laptop is part of the fun for the whole family. Take it and learn how to control use like when and how long.
The only time I took a laptop on vacation was to allow my kids to play with it in the car. Since the battery only lasted a short time, this turned out to be a mistake as we mostly had one more thing to carry around with us (and since it belonged to where I worked, one more thing to worry could get broken). The problem is a cultural one more than anything else. Our culture needs to change so that we are not dependent on these machines when we are supposed to be getting away from work. The body, mind, and spirit need real time away from work (and the fun stuff computers bring too). We need to be able to sever the tether and know we can come back to work with no worries.
I bring my iPod Touch instead. It is way easier to pack and get through airport security and I can google restaurants and weather, watch movies, check e-mail, maps, etc. anywhere there is a wi-fi connection.

Depends on what the laptop is being used for, when I go on vacation and bring my laptop I only use it for personal things. Googling directions and find stores, checking my personal emails, watching movies at the airport, etc etc.
