eady to switch over to eBooks but not ready to pay the high price for an eReader?
PC
World spotted a new reader called eSlick set to launch in January on
Foxit's website. The new e-reader packs a bunch of goodies like an MP3 player,
earphones, 2GB SD card, various software, and the usual manuals, cables, and
adapters.
The sleek reader will sport a six-inch electronic-paper display, 128MB of built in memory, USB port, and is capable of supporting most eBook formats including PDF, TXT, and other printable documents. When it launches, it will be available in either black, gray, or white.
This is the first-generation e-book reader sold through Foxit's website, which is why it's selling at an introductory price of $230 ($259 after it launches). That's not a bad price, considering the Kindle retails for $359 and Sony's Reader for $399.
The Kindle and eSlick may have similar electronic displays (both are made by the same company), but there are major differences between them like the lack of wireless connectivity. With Kindle you can receive digital content from newspapers and blogs automatically if you pay for a monthly subscription, but with eSlick you'll have to do everything manually. I guess this won't really matter if all you want is a simple electronic reader.
I definitely think this one is worth checking out at that price, plus did I mention it plays MP3s?

Re post 2: Kindle books are a proprietary format that are only offered to Kindles, however, Amazon controls MobiPocket. So this means that while you would not be able to get eBooks straight form the Amazon website (aside from their Amazon Shorts), you do have a very similar offering of eBooks from MobiPocket. That being said, I'm not sure if this new device will support mobi files or not when it launches. But, it is running on a Linux OS so it would only be a matter of a firmware update to add mobi compatability.
