It's a big week for Nintendo rumors. First talk of a Nintendo DS with MP3 player and camera starts to make the rounds. Now comes an even bigger rumor: Nintendo will release a follow-up to the Wii in 2011.
The news comes from What They Play, an online video game guide for parents. In its story, the site describes the neew Wii console as a "true 'next generation' Nintendo" and "far more than a simple refresh of the current hardware." Currently dubbed "Wii HD" (a name that's no worse than "Wii" to begin with, I guess), it is said to revolve around the same kind of gameplay while upping the ante in the performance department. That would likely mean graphics that finally crawl out of the 1990s as well as real internal storage like a hard drive.
What's the proof of all of this? What They Play cites the usual "multiple sources" in the game industry but also notes that Nintendo is now spending $370 million on R&D in a year vs. just $34 million in 2003. You don't spend that kind of money without something in the pipeline.
And, of course, a new console makes nothing but sense. The Wii has captured the imagination of the world... because that's what you have to use to fill in the gaps where the Wii's graphics aren't up to snuff. Casual gamers are totally sold on the Wii, but hardcore gamers—the ones that spend all their disposable income on this stuff—are still playing their Xbox 360 and PS3. Can a next-gen Wii offer the best of both worlds: Innovative gameplay combined with an immersive audio-video experience? 2011 is barely two years away...

This is tech news? Come, by 2011 I'm sure all the console companies will have a new system. 2011 is more then 2 yrs away, and all the current consoles are at least 2-3 yrs old. I'm sure we all know that ANY console, these days, is absolutely obsolete after 5 yrs. So, duh, they're going to come out with a new game system in a little over 2 yrs, especially when you consider the fact that the current system is whoofully inadaquite to the task of playing todays games.
SWEET!!!!!!! with everyone still waiting just to get there eyes on the first wii in there house can switch there eyes on this and I'm sure some xbox and ps3 players will get jelous, ofcaurse xbox is coming out with a new one that looks like just like the wii so they better watch out
A lot can happen in two years. By the time NINTENDO.LTD upgrades its software and hardware, Microsoft will probably still be a step further. It's two years of production not just for Nintendo, but for the other gaming industries. heck I wouldn't be surprised if SEGA made a come-back to the gaming world with hardware.
man I dont know it seems people will always hate someone, and I can's see it changing. To get away from people and the hate go get a new game console and learn to play together online. ONLINE PEACE BY 2011!!!!!!!!!!
This might be ok news...if it said Q2 2009 but 2011? That is so vague and far away that not only will there be a new xbox by that time, but if the current trend of lackluster family fun games coming out on the Wii continues, who will care if the crap rolling out is in HD or not?
They also better fix the sunlight problem. (If sunlight shines directly at the controller, the pointer on the screen will move very erratically.)
Either the Wii2 will work like the original or it will be advanced and have new features hmm...
And in five years there will still be Wii shortages. :)
Waaaaaaaaaah! I just bought a wii in August! i barley got started, and i am an idol to my buds for it. If another friend gets a wii 2, i will not be able to use my old wii data and i will be out of business

It better have backwards compatibility with the first Wii games. I just bought a Wii this year and a bunch of games to boot. I would have no problems buying a Wii 2 in 2011, unless it doesn't play original Wii games.
